A unique abstract plaster sculpture by Belgian artist Jan Keustermans (b. 1940), whose practice evolved from figurative sculpture toward increasingly abstract forms. Keustermans described these later works as “memorial stones”, sculptures intended to evoke memory and emotion through form rather than representation.
Composed of softly rounded, interlocking volumes, the work possesses a strong architectural presence while retaining a sense of movement and organic growth. The rough plaster surface reveals traces of the artist’s hand, lending warmth and immediacy to the composition.
Keustermans studied at the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp and became one of Belgium’s most accomplished sculptors and medalists, producing more than 850 works over the course of his career. Working across materials including bronze, marble, stone, clay and plaster, he developed a distinctly personal sculptural language that balanced monumentality with quiet contemplation.
A unique work and one of the artist’s most recent creations.
