Description

An exquisite square tray crafted in Japan during the 1920s, finished in deep black urushi lacquer. A fine example of Wajima-nuri, it showcases the meticulous technique for which the region is renowned. Layer upon layer of lacquer is applied and polished, creating a surface of remarkable depth, durability and quiet lustre.

The form is understated yet purposeful. Along the underside of the rim, a subtle carved detail makes the tray easier to hold, a small gesture that reflects the Japanese appreciation for considered design and everyday beauty. The result is an object that feels both refined and functional, embodying the timeless elegance of traditional lacquerware.
